June is Audiobook Appreciation Month! Whether you have a CD player available or not, audiobooks are available on CD and through apps such as Libby, Hoopla or Tumblebooks (Read Alongs for kids).
Humans are busy in 2022 and listening to an audiobook is a great way to enjoy literature while completing other tasks. Cleaning? Commuting? Gardening? Crafting? While your hands are busy, your ears could be listening to authentic cultural voices as you escape to a far-off land on a grand quest.
Audiobooks have numerous benefits including relaxing our eyes, building literacy and fluency skills and immersing readers further into the sensory experience of the story. They can also be beneficial to those with special needs, dyslexia or those who speak English as a second language.
Children who listen to audiobooks can seek out stories above their reading levels, develop pronunciation and storytelling skills and create space for auditory learners to develop a love of reading.
Did you know that listening to audiobooks also counts towards our Summer Reading Challenge? Even on your busy days, you can tune into an audiobook and those minutes will count towards your reading goal!
