Winter Reading Challenge 2022 has ended.

Read for a Better World

From January 1 to January 31, 2022, Warrenville readers (and listeners!) of all ages can participate in Beanstack’s Fifth Annual Winter Reading Challenge, “Read for a Better World,” sponsored by Lerner Publishing Group. Thousands of other libraries and schools across the nation are joining in, too, for a chance at winning prizes.

The challenge: Read at least one hour during the month of January and log your reading on the Beanstack site. Of course, the more you read, and the entire Warrenville community reads, the more chances WPLD has to win prizes like more books for our collections or a virtual author visit (see below). You will earn badges (bragging rights!) and, if you want, use the option to share your progress with family or friends.

How to log hours: See instructions for signing up and logging your time spent reading at: HOW TO LOG READING HOURS.

What to read: WPLD members will have unlimited access to Lerner published book titles for the duration of the challenge, directly in the Beanstack web and mobile apps. That means every reader will have instant access to quality titles with no holds, wait times or borrowing limits. Of course, you can read books from any source, such as on our shelves, in our catalog or available for download, or from your friends or a Little Free Library in the area. Listening to books also counts!

What’s in it for you? In addition to being automatically entered into our drawing to win a Hot Chocolate Gift Set for reading at least one hour in January, the Library could receive new books to add to our current offerings, signed books that individual participants could win in prize drawings or virtual author visits such as:

Library Grand Prize:

  • Virtual Author visit
  • Book collection
  • Signed copy of “Dictionary for a Better World: Poems, Quotes, and Anecdotes from A to Z” by Charles Waters and Irene Latham

3 Library Runners-Up:

  • Book collection
  • Signed copy of “Dictionary for a Better World: Poems, Quotes, and Anecdotes from A to Z” by Charles Waters and Irene Latham

5 Library Honorable Mentions

HOW TO LOG READING HOURS

To participate in our winter reading challenge, you need to create an account and log your reading in a software platform called Beanstack, which has a web and mobile app. You can register as an Individual or as a Family. You can also use a printable reading log.

To get started, follow these instructions for accessing Beanstack through a web brower. To use the mobile app, see steps below.

How do I sign up for the Winter Reading Challenge?

1. Click here.

2. Click the image that says “Read for a Better World.”

3. If you have already created a Beanstack account, you can sign in here by clicking on Sign In and entering your login information. You can Register yourself or your family by clicking Register an Individual or Family.

4. Beanstack will ask if you have already created an account. If yes, please log in. If no, follow the prompts for registration. You’ll be asked if you want to register individually or if you are registering a child. You can always add children or other readers after you create your account.

5. To register, you’ll need to fill in pertinent information including a password.

Once you are registered and logged in, you’ll be able to Join the Challenge.

How do I log my reading?

1. At the top of the screen, click on the button that says "Log Reading and Activities."

2. Select the reader you are logging for.

3. Select Log Minutes (to gain badges and eligibility into the reading challenge, you have to log how many minutes you’ve read, not books).

4. Enter the amount of time you’ve spent reading, or use the reading timer! The reading timer is a useful tool if you care to log in before you start reading and then set a timer for how long you plan to read.

Entering the title information is completely optional.

You must read and log at least 60 minutes between January 1–31 to qualify for the challenge and be entered into our prize drawing for a Hot Chocolate Gift Set.

How do I use the Beanstack mobile app?

1. Download the app from the Apple App Store or from Google Play onto your device.

2. When you open the app for the first time, click “Let’s Go!”

3. At the next prompt, select “School, Library, or Bookstore.”

4. At the next prompt, click “Find a Site” and type Warrenville Public Library to find our Beanstack site.

Once you find our site, sign in or register your account much like you would for most digital apps.

You will log your reading minutes as described above.
