Automatic Item Renewals

As a SWAN library, WPLD now participates in automatic item renewals for all cardholders who check out items at our library.

Eligible items will be renewed 2 days before the due date. An eligible item is any item that has not already been renewed 2 times and has not been requested by another cardholder. Items will be renewed from the current due date. For example, books checked out at WPLD have a 4-week loan period. A book due on 1/2/2021 that is eligible for renewal will be automatically renewed and due on 1/30/2021.

If you have an email on file you will receive a notice including titles that could or could not be renewed. Sign up for notifications through the “My Account” feature in the catalog.

Check “My Account” or use the SWAN mobile app regularly to stay up to date on your due dates and renewals. In the Checkouts tab, you will be able to see how many times your items have been renewed.

Interlibrary Loans received from Non-SWAN libraries are not eligible for automatic renewals. You may request up to 1 renewal on Non-SWAN Interlibrary Loan items by visiting or calling our Member Services Desk at 630/393-1171 x100.

Hold Requests

WPLD cardholders may place a request on items that are checked out or otherwise unavailable. Holds may be placed by members by phone, through the catalog, on the SWAN Libraries mobile app or in person. Members will be notified by phone, text or email when the items are available. Items are held for 7 days.

Borrowing Restrictions

Library privileges will be suspended for cardholders with:

  • Items 21 or more days overdue*
  • An account balance of $10 or more
  • Any unpaid lost or damaged items
  • An outstanding balance in debt collection

*Temporarily extended from 14 days to 21 days on 9/9/20 due to quarantine for returned materials.

Fine Free Library

Effective July 1, 2020, the Library does not charge late fees for overdue items. See Fine Free Library.

Long Overdue and Lost Item Fees

If an item is not returned within 42 days of the due date, a charge for the cost of the item will be added to the borrower's account.

Lost materials will be accepted back within 1 year of the due date. After 1 year, the cost of the item must be paid in full. Replacement copies are not accepted.

Damaged Item Fees

If an item sustains damage which can be repaired, a fee may be assessed according to the repair fee schedule.

If material is considered damaged beyond repair and judged by the Library as being unsuitable for the collection, the member will be billed for the item. Material considered damaged beyond repair includes, but is not limited to: water-damaged, chewed, burned, with substantial stains or markings, numerous ripped pages. Replacement copies are not accepted.

Incomplete Item Fees

Members will be billed for the full cost of items which are returned incomplete. Replacement copies are not accepted.

Lost Cards

In the event that a library card is damaged or reported lost, a replacement card will be issued upon presentation of current photo ID and a payment of $1.00. The original library card will be invalidated. The fee will be waived if the card is expired.
