Book List– A plethora of trending diets seeking to soothe symptoms of digestive disorders and create happier stomachs, includes the Low-Fodmap Diet. FODMAPs – Fermentable Oligosaccharide (mainly Fructose), Disaccharide (mainly Lactose), Mono-saccharides and Polyols (mainly certain fruits & vegetables) are carbohydrates seen by health ‘experts,’ as poorly absorbed by the small intestine and trigger digestive symptoms.
Beat Your Bloat : Recipes and Exercises to Promote Digestive Health by Maeve Madden covers general digestive issues, gives detailed information on specific disorders, and treatment diets, including Low-FODMAPS. In addition to introducing a stomach-friendly diet plan with recipes, this book incorporates exercise-specifically yoga in treating symptoms. As a super-fan of yoga, I highly appreciated this aspect of the book.
What a perfect title – one that inspires hope! This book includes a detailed quiz to best match symptoms to specific disorders and delves into those conditions in each chapter. I found this helpful to analyze specific symptoms, learn their possible causes, and treatments.
Book – As a lover of all things sweet, Year of No Sugar by Eve Schaub sounded like the worst thing imaginable. A whole year? No sugar!? How awful! Once I got over my initial shock, however, I immediately grabbed the book and started reading.
Eve was inspired to start her Year of No sugar project after reading books by obesity and sugar experts, including Dr. Robert Lustig. Though Eve and her family led a relatively healthy lifestyle, she soon discovered sugar was in nearly everything they ate. And so the project began. The first few chapters introduce the planning of the project, as Eve consulted with her husband and two daughters on how the year would run out. I loved the idea of doing this project as a family, having that support system to get through it together. I can imagine the kids dismay, learning how their lives would be affected, and dealing with social pressures outside of the home with all things sugary and sweet. Instead of going completely cold turkey, Eve and her husband finally decided on the 1 Dessert a Month rule. Also, the two daughters could make their own decisions when it came to offerings of sweets at school, sleepovers, and other functions, as long as they were open to their parents when they did choose to indulge.
Eve is an honest, funny, and wonderful writer. She managed to mix science with her own experiences without making my brain explode. I appreciated her point of view, with the added input of her husband and children as they embarked on a journey not for the faint of heart. Check out Eve Schaub’s newest memoir, Year of No Clutter. One book at a time, Eve is conquering my biggest vices.
Magazines – You can enjoy several titles among our eMagazine offerings from Zinio that are not in the regular print collection. I’ve set Zinio to alert me to the availability of new issues of two that I enjoy, Natural Health and GEEK.
Natural Health focuses on health and nutrition, fitness, and the links between mind and body. Typical articles are on health issues like allergies and stress. One article outlines nine things people often do that are aging their bodies more than they probably know. The Nov/Dec issue features holiday recipes from celebrity chef Giada De Laurentiis, and drug-free headache remedies. Natural weight-loss is promoted through articles such as the one that teaches readers six Pilates moves that can be done anywhere at any time. There are articles on meditation and other techniques that are helpful for slowing down the pace of everyday life and creating a more relaxed and manageable environment.
GEEK is a bi-monthly lifestyle magazine that includes features on science, movies, television, video games, technology, comics, music, gadgets, and more. The May-June issue included articles on the Guardians of the Galaxy, Mars Rovers, and the curious incidences of our dogs aligning with the magnetic fields of the earth. I found even the advertisements unique and entertaining. One was for a service offering 3D printing of action figures created from your own identity.

Book – This book’s popularity is likely due to Dr. Perlmutter’s assertion that one’s genetic predisposition to mental aging is not set in stone, and that by altering our diets we can reduce the neurological degeneration that our parents and grandparents may have exhibited. Gluten free, low-sugar diets have become increasingly prevalent for a variety of reasons. In Grain Brain, Dr. Perlmutter shares compelling research linking gluten and sugar consumption to neurological degeneration such as that which occurs within dementia and Alzheimer’s patients. Dr. Perlmutter has the distinction of being both a neurologist and a nutritionist, and this book recounts incidences where a change in his patients’ diets alleviated symptoms from various neurological disorders. Grain Brain is also filled with references to other researchers’ studies on the impacts of elements such as “good fats” on the brain. His main premise is that all gluten sources are damaging to the brain, including whole grain sources. More easily digested is his confidence that the consumption of “healthy” fats found in fish, nuts, and eggs, will prolong the health of our brains. Grain Brain includes a 4-week plan of healthy eating and exercise. This book will obviously appeal to anyone who is already inclined to try a low-carb, or “Paleolithic” diet. However, proponents of a diet relying heavily on whole grains, as symbolized by the USDA Food Pyramid, have been less pleased with Dr. Perlmutter’s recommendations.
Book – After receiving the gift of a blender marketed for creating nutritional smoothies, I sought out recipes and nutritional information to expand upon what was provided in the small booklet that came with the appliance. In this book Kris Carr, cancer survivor and popular author of Crazy Sexy Cancer Tips, has gathered medical experts together to explain the reasoning behind “a low-glycemic, vegetarian program that emphasizes balancing the pH of the body with lush whole and raw foods, nourishing organic green drinks, and scrumptious smoothies.” Carr intersperses information from nutritional studies with everyday tips for incorporating often radical changes into one’s everyday diet. These changes include reducing one’s consumption of meat, sugar, gluten, caffeine, alcohol, and dairy. Her book uses sassy language, personal anecdotes, and a colorful magazine style layout to motivate readers to alter their eating habits for the sake of their health, mood, energy, and longevity. Other library offerings with recipes and information on liquid nutrition include: The Juice Lady’s Turbo Diet by Cherie Calborn, The Juicing Bible by Pat Crocker, and The Lean by Kathy Freston.
